A. N. Mercer began building Sanctuary in his late teens and early twenties as a tabletop roleplaying world for friends. The game was broader and more openly absurd than the novels: a place where advanced technology, theology, paperwork and bad decisions could collide during a single session.
The NPC who stayed behind
Dirk Strangelove was not originally the hero. He was a non-player character inside one campaign. The situations the players created around him supplied loose fragments that kept returning long after the sessions ended.
A game can follow a group in every direction at once. A novel needed a narrower lens. Dirk became that lens: an investigator close enough to Sanctuary's institutions to understand their rules and disposable enough to be crushed by them.
What changed on the way to fiction
The novels keep the setting's straight-faced absurdity but give each impossible mechanism a human consequence. A joke about a posthumous contract becomes a story about ownership. A rule about legal death becomes a question about whether identity can survive in paperwork, weapons and body parts.
The first book grew from six linked shorter stories and was rewritten into a compact doorway to the setting. The later books expand the arc while following the damage left by earlier cases.
What remains from the table
- Consequences that emerge from rules rather than prophecy.
- Side characters who behave as though they have lives beyond the current scene.
- A world large enough to imply cases the novels never show.
- Solutions built through compromise, interpretation and occasional procedural sabotage.
A bridge back to roleplayers
The Dirk Diaries now offer a separate daily serial for readers who want smaller glimpses of the city. A forthcoming system-neutral Sanctuary intake generator will turn its bureaucratic logic into prompts that game masters can use without reproducing text from the novels.
